4001/4003 electrics

Post by philipharris »

Does anyone know, is there any significant difference between the pups/electrics of a 79 4001 and those of a modern-day 4003?

As far as I know: the .0047 cap, (and push/pull tone pot in modern 4003) for the bridge pup, the values of the pots (250+500 in 4001 and 330x2 in 4003). And well, the pup's wiring has changed some times if I'm not mistaken. There is a special post about that if you look at Ted's Rick's Anatomy lessons.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers!

The 70s higains (neck and bridge) measure around 8k+ and the new higains measure around 12k.

My 1981 4003 has 8K pups...

I think the 12K pups came quite a bit later...

Does that contradict what you are saying? Or am i missing the point?

No it doesn't Karl. I was answering thinking the OP was considering a 4001 or a new 4003.

The earlier 4003 pickups were the 8k windings, and it wasn't until the mid-80s they changed to 9.5k. When RIC went to the molded bobbins the windings went to around 10.5k. From then to the present the windings have crept up to the present 12k. My 2004 had 11.4k windings.

It's good you asked for clarification. Here it the best source outside of RIC for pickup info:
