66 360/12 thoughts?

Post by bubbasweet »

I picked this up online. I am not an xpert. I was hoping some of the xperts on this page could ha e a loook and see if this was a reasonable purchase. Living where I live, 60's 12 Ricks are simply not ever available in stores so had to buy online.
Seller was great and told me everything but case and 2 screws in bridge is stock and that the frets we still OK and truss worked fine. I wanted to post some photos and see if this was a good purchase? I am left and will be switching the strings around and new nut cut. Any advice? I am going to ry and not drill a strap hole in the other horn. Any alternatives for this?

THX for any info.

Hi Brian, welcome to the RRF!

I make no claims about being an Xpert (!), but it sure looks great and original-- nice fireglo
On that one. The best way for us to tell you how you did is mentioning the price paid (if you're into that..).

Also, if you're interested, I have an original '66 360 silver/blue case for sale, if you're looking to keep it all original spec. PM me for details.

Paid about 4K USD. Yes I would be interested in any of the parts that I need. It appears that the 2 knobs are missing the silver pieces and the 2 screws for the bridge also would like proper ones. Anyone email me or pm me if you have these.. THX

Don't worry----- it was a steal of a deal! Those are usually selling at $5k and above for a long time. Well done!

I might have some other parts for you too, I will have to check.

Thanx. This page seem a little more lively than the RIC page. Not sure why. Just seems like more replies happening.

That is 'ZACTLY what my '92 360/12 looks like! Gotta be the most beautiful guitar ever made....in 1966, Naperville, Illinois, I was 16 and a 1/5 part owner of a '66 FireGlo Rick 12....my band, The Vynes, bought it and did every Byrd-Beatle-Hollies song we could figure out.....the guitar had a silver Tolex case....black leather trim.....I believe we paid around $325 for this guitar--the most fun I ever had in 40 years of sock-hops, Christmas dances, Spring Mixers, Teen Clubs and finally, down and dirty nightclub playing.......I would have those days again....

Welcome, Gee!

I share your excitement at gazing upon these superb photos of a '66 Rick 360-12. I, too, was 16 in 1966 and I managed to get hold of one in Mapleglo and played all the tunes you mentioned in our band and then some (try "Purple Haze" or James Brown's "I Feel Good" on a 12-string).

There are some differences between your '92 360-12 and the '66. Probably the most noticeable one is that your '92 has 24 frets and triangle inlays vs. 21 frets and full-width for the '66. The toaster pups ohm readings are likely different, too, and no checkered binding on the back of the '92 and I could go on but, hey, these can be viewed as minor details. They are both great guitars. The important thing is that the sight of that '66 360-12 still generates excitement 40+ years later!

Brian, welcome to the forum and best compliments for your guitar.
It's very close to the second 360/12 owned by George, check the latter part of this link:

Here's it's brother... my June '66 360/12. Picked this up back in March of 1985 from George Gruhn who shipped it to me in Hawaii.

They sure were crankin' 'em out in '66, weren't they? This one from May of that year has had some...modifications:
