Barre chords & neck radius

Post by BuddyDog »

Maybe you can help me out here.

I am seriously considering pulling the trigger on a 12 string Ric and was wondering if barre chords are easier on a vintage type 7 1/2" neck radius or a more modern 10" or 12" radius neck. I am looking at a 360/12c63 versus a 360/12V64 versus a 360/12 (new) versus a 660/12.

I blame Gary for this 12 string RAS!

I'm sure you will get answers saying each is easier than the other. I suppose it depends on what you're used to. Try them all, and then decide for yourself. :D

Whichever one looks better to you. I know that sounds silly, but you'll be far more inspired to play it. Unless one is really a dog, barre chords shouldn't be a problem on either, as it's usually the open chords that are a problem on the older, more narrow necks.

Having said that, my 2005 360/12FG is a breeze to play barre chords on, unlike some older models I've owned in the past.

7 1/2" neck radius IMO.

I own Ricks with neck radii ranging from dead flat (481SF) to 6" radius ('60 Capri), and, frankly, don't have any problems at all moving back and forth between them. I'm primarily a rhythm player, and barre chords are my sonic bread and butter...

Barre chords are no problem on my 360/12C63.
