ProgKnowSys Oct. 3rd Socal

Post by s4001 »

A week out this time. I'll shamelessly bump throughout the week.

ProgKnowSys - The Progressive Rock Tribute Band

10/3/2009 9:00 PM at Centerfield Sports Bar & Grill
17296 Beach Boulevard, Huntington Beach, California 92647
Cost: FREE!

We'll be playing our usual set of overindulgent prog ditties by Deep Purple, Yes, Rush, Wings, Journey, Genesis, Toto, et al. And of course, I'll probably have some fugly Rickenbacker slung over my shoulder.

Come one, come all - and remember the better you drink, the more we sound. Or something like that.

I was there for three sets with my date; the band was fantastic! They played so well that I even enjoyed songs they played that I don't like the original artists' renditions of. :D It was a lot of fun listening to and watching them play. :)

I can remember, all too well, a time when it wasn't cool to be a prog rocker...but now it seems to be getting more respectable. So, therefore.....

I'm coming out too, fellers...

(There, I feel better already...now, where'd I put those pointy-toed elf boots?)
I didn't get where I am today by being on time...

I can hear the meeting now:

"My name is Jason"

(all, in unison - "Hi Jason")

"and it's been 3 days since I last played a doubleneck"

No way they'll get the 4003 and PK5's out of my hands. Court order or not, suspended license or not, 12 step meetings or not, they can get it when they pry it from my cold dead hands - and feet.

Elf Boots?! How about the cape?! ;)

The punk and new wave movement was a rebellion against the dominance of prog, among other things, but with the passage of time, and the diverse types of music available these days, people can like both without fear of derision, I think. :D

Hope we're not hijacking your thread too much Scotty   ..... Before I could decide on getting low-top or high-top elf shoes, I started reading up on some music genres in Wikipedia:

New Wave:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Wave_music

Progressive Rock:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock

Power Pop:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_pop

Now I'm really confused .... not sure when neo-progressive rock digressed from the aftermath of grunge and evolved into post hardcore and where that leaves glam rock and symphonic rock aficionados ...

I seem to recall a brief period when the phrase 'Progressive Country' was being bandied about...seems a bit like saying "NASCAR's going GREEN!"

That must have given way to newgrass, which of course, is real and huge right now, thanks to mavens like Punch Brothers, The Infamous Stringdusters, etc etc.

Yeah, you're right as usual, Jdog...I went for the cheap laugh, as I often do. (We'll see whether it get's construed as being 'too political'...)

There is such a category as 'ProgCountry', I s'pose...although I'll confess I don't know what bands it actually referred to when the phrase was in use: The Charlie Daniels Band? Elvin Bishop? Kansas? Slim Whitman, with his 'Jon Anderson' voice?

I would tend to include The Dixie Dregs...and maybe Lowell George era Little Feat...
