Three Cool Cats

Post by JeffZ »

For their 1962 audition for Decca, the Beatles did a song called Three Cool Cats. While surfing YouTube, I found the below link. It''''s Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde and Dickie Pride doing the song. It would be interesting to know if this is where The Beatles picked the song up from. A little dated (1959) but still good fun..

HAAA..... no doubt that the Beatles listened to this version (or one very similar). It's always amazing how The Beatles cover of a song is so much more exciting than the original. They were able to infuse energy into any song, no matter how lame the original.

Speaking of the songs from the Decca Audition, here's a nice version of "Like Dreamers Do"... NOT the Beatles (obviously)... possibly The Beatnix

The BeaTrips from Kyoto, Japan ---- These guys are really good!
Words need a little work, but this is a very nice job.... The BeaTrips should get
a lot of credit for doing these more obscure Beatle/cover songs, and doing them well.

Anybody remember "Charlie Brown", by the Coasters? They were billed as the "Clown Princes of Rock & Roll" when they sang this 1958 Lieber and Stoller hit.

"Three Cool Cats" was the "B" side. A lot of bands have covered it over the years.

I remember that song very clearly Paul.
Apparently, in the early days, The Beatles would often do obscure B-sides, so as to be different to all the other Liverpool bands. Very smart, and logical way to stand out from the crowd.
Once they were performing their own material, it didnt matter, they just STOOD out!

"Searchin'" is a song written by Leiber and Stoller specifically for The Coasters. It was released as a single on Atco Records in March 1957, and topped the Rhythm and Blues Chart for twelve weeks. It reached #3 on the national pop singles chart. Although the Coasters had previously done well on the R&B charts, it was "Searchin" (along with "Young Blood" on the flip side) that sparked the group's rock and roll fame. Singer/songwriter Paul McCartney chose Searchin' as one of his Desert Island Discs in 1982. McCartney performed the song with The Beatles during their audition for Decca Records on 1 January 1962.

yup. On a lot of those early covers you can see that the Beatles were doing very faithful versions of the records they were listening to.

The (very early) Beatles were were quite influnced by early Tamla/Motown artists, picking up American singles (45s) down at the Liverpool docks from sailors returning from overseas. And they definitely liked trying out the B sides of those records.

The sound they got on cover songs they recorded on their first, second and fourth albums (such as Twist and Shout, Please Mr. Postman and You Really Got a Hold On Me was them trying to imitate these artists, whom they had a great respect for.
Ka is a wheel.
