Issue with 360v64: is this a deeper issue and recurrant?

Post by pfflam »

I noticed recently with more than one 360v64 that there was a problem with cracking of the varnish around the neck, particularly where the inlay is.

What I am wondering is is this a sign of a deeper structural issue with regards to the neck with these or is it, as one person said recently, simply having to do with the varnish and temperature issues?

I recently purchased a 360v64 and this cracking is present, what are the chances that this harkens a need for a complete neck-reset?

I have a six string FG and a 12 string JG with no issues as you described. I guess these are environment caused. Temperature up and down, humidity up and downn.....keep it in a constant environment for best benefit of your babies :)

Cracking around the inlays happens when the guitar is exposed to very dry conditions after it's been in a normal range of humidity. It's because the wood of the fretboard shrinks and the polyester inlays don't, as they have no water to give up to the atmosphere. This is not peculiar to the V64, and has nothing to do with neck angle, so there's not a question of neck resetting.

I think I might have described it incorrectly, I'm talking about the body where the neck meets the body, just below the body, cracks that run along everywhere the neck meets the body and the binding too.

Maybe I should re-post this since my initial description of the problem was so wrong?

I emant, as I said above, the space between the neck and the body, all around the neck where it meets the body.

Yep. Now I have a mental picture of two entirely different issues...

So, is this bad?

I mean, when there is lacquer separation around the neck-heel, does that indicate an immanent need for a neck-reset?

What I'm trying to say is that we need photos...good, detailed and in-focus...of the area in question, before any advice can be given!
