My first mod * 4004cii*

So the stock Schaller has a base plate , but this won't allow for the lowest action , as even with the saddles at their lowest postion the action is still rather high for me , and the saddle screws hurt my hand *ouch ! So... off it went , now it has killer low action with a perfect neck * the straightest in the land * and I swear it sounds better

Cool that it you have the option of removing it if you want. I was going to do the same for Tony Cabibe when I visited him last year, but I wasn't sure if it would be too low and I was running out of time to have to re-set up his Cii for him if I had to re-install the plate.

It's perfect now for me but it could go a little higher too so it seems the base plate is not needed . Now if you like really high action keep the base plate on

I had the same problem with my '02 CII and my '08 Laredo. Mine both had the ABM bridge, and it didnt have a base plate to remove. To get the action where I wanted it, I had to go to the Hipshot style "A".

Same footprint, much better bridge.

I just returned from playing my 4004Cii Blueburst and was wondering IF the tailpiece could be used this way without causing any damage to the finish or if it could be intonated correctly. I love this bass and it got a LOT of attention today!

I'm so paranoid about doing ANYTHING to my RICS that may cause some kind of damage...is the tailpiece stable and firm in place without that base plate?

The good news is the screws did not go all the way through and it really does seem to sound better with the bridge on the body and off the plate , I didn't even remove the strings but I did loosen them You would need to readjust the height and intonate again , no biggie . So if it's to high for you now very good chance this will be the fix but you will not be able to get them this high again when you remove the plate , unless you reinstall the plate . All you need is a good phillips head driver , the screws will bite into fresh wood for the last few turns . I'd take Joey up on that offer if you have any concerns

I actually have a A style here but the 3 hole Schaller is a different layout then this so I didn't want to add holes , but this was the cure for me so glad it went this well . Now what to do with a Gold a type

I first used a Schaller bridge on a '72 Jazz Bass I used to have; a friend of mine (the forumite who bought John Williams' CW 12) has it now. Back then (mid '70s) there was no extra bottom plate, this looks like a recent development on this bridge, most likely an add-on to raise it depending on the needs of a particular instrument.
