2 Rics in one day!

Post by KenOnBass »

Got me two new to me Rics in one day! Strange how this worked out. I bought the V63 a week ago and it was scheduled to arrive. Then, while out at lunch looking for 12 string acoustic for my wife's birthday at a used store I hadn't visited for a couple years, I came across this mint 660/12 at a very reasonable price. We worked out a package on the 660/12 and a nice playing, budget Crafter 12 string acoustic. (Gotta sell an old Stingray bass and my 330 now and a few effects to pay for all of this!) I'm totally blown away by the playability and tone of them both!

Awesome!
I'm looking for an early '90's MG V63 myself.
You don't need a 21 fretter do you?

I see this was your first post. Welcome to the club!

Thanks, it's good to be here and back among Rics lovers. I've owned a few and each had a cool story.

Briefly... Although I've always been mostly a Fender Jazz player, I think Rics are the most beautiful guitars of all.
1. In 1986 purchased a new 4003...I was a teenage runner at a law firm, and bought it with cash fedexed to me by some guy that wanted me to wait by the fax machine for a doc that needed to delivered for his presidential appointment or something. He sent me $400 cash. I bought the Ric the next day for $475! Fast fwd a couple years and I went to live in Japan for six months. Upon seeing the prices of American gear there, I put my Ric up for sale and got about $1300 for it.

Other Rics:
2. '88 FG 4003 (paid $500 via harmony central)
3. '90 FG 360/12 WB...spacing was too small and the neck had truss rod issues
4. '89 MG 4001 V63 bought and sold within a few weeks. (I wasn't playing or earning much at the time.)
5. '67 FG 4005 found pre-internet vis "newsgroups" at Rose Cottage in Portland, ME
6. '98 FG Ric 4003 - found the neck too fat.
7. '08 JG Ric 330--has to go to pay for these two latest ones.

I think I finally know what I like in a Ric and what I need from them and these two are it!

Excellent! It took me about 45 to figure out what I really like! You did well!

Great story...I love this kind of stuff!

Every once in a while, I'll try Fender, but I NEVER...EVER have any luck with the necks......EVERY one has been dorked. I have a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz that I love more than any of the Fender's I've ever owned. Very comfortable to play, just a great bass for pennies compared to their other models.

Yeah, that line grabbed me too, Tony! Congrats on your new Ricks, Ken. I've discovered my own Rick preferences as well. It's taken me around 25 owned, and hundreds played. But I have no regrets. I've learned so much and it's really been fun trying them all out.

Great choice on the V63. I don't know my way around a 6 or 12 string, but your choice there looks very nice too.

Wow, nice score! Congrats and welcome to the RRF!
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

I sold the 4005 to Rumble Seat at a guitar swap meet and regretted it right away. I made a big profit, but still he doubled the price and I think sent it Chicago Music Exchange from there. If you ever see it, I think it was GE 2451 and had considerable thumbrest and belt buckle wear...but it looked sooo cool...like a Ric that had been played for years. Serious mojo!
