What music/other basses do you play?
Sorry if it's been asked before, but curious as to what music folks here play and what other basses you play. (I know it's not all prog and Beatles covers.) In addition to my V63, I have:
-a couple old Fender Jazzes
-an old P bass
-a couple Sadowsky Metros (UV70 and P/J 4)
-a couple Ovation Magnums
-Dano Bartone, Squire Fretless
I play ole' skool funk, rock, and lately more Beatles stuff.
What about everyone else?

A Kubicki and Jazz bass, but the Ric gets the most board time.

Re: What music/other basses do you play?
I used to own several Fender Jazzes, a custom Jazz Bass knockoff, and a MusicMan Stingray, all before I got my first Ric and decided the others had to go to make room for... more Rics. I miss the Stingray occasionally, and I've become more enamored with the P Bass than the Jazz Bass over time, but I have a feeling it'll be a good long while before I venture out and buy another non-Ric. If my dad's Hofner faker counts, then there's also that... but honestly I can't stand it one bit so I never asked to gig the little toy, I just plunk around on it when I'm visiting home! It's pretty, at least.
The projects I've been in have involved blues, blues-rock, hard bop and swing, fusion, "classic rock", and country. Most of those gigs were with my 4003 AFG that has seen a lot of gigs in its short life! The 4003FL comes in at a a close second for gig time..

Thanks for asking--I think most of us belong because we enjoy sharing our experience/likes/dislikes. Heck, we simply like to geek out on the bass.
Apart from my 08 MID 4003, I use a custom Benavente 5-string fretless.--it's about 10 years old, and made just for me by Chris. Pics of both below:

I've been fortunate to play a wide range of music. I was classically trained on the upright, went to college playing classical, got burned out. I was soon turned on to jazz, and then it was all over. I was almost strictly electric from them on, rebelling against years of classical music rigidity (not to slight it, I'd be nowhere without my classical training). Until recently, I played an equal blend of rock, jazz, funk-ish soul, keeping myself quite busy--I relish the supporting role and, as we all know, bands are always looking for a bass player. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been fortunate to play with folks like Joshua Eden and Tara Linda, among others. The latter just released her newest album, which is very cool (I back her live, but didn't play on the album). I played a live radio show in Berkeley with her last March, in which I used the Ric exclusively. She calls her stuff, "Tortilla Western." It's spooky cool. Joshua Eden has this gritty soul sound to his music. He's lots of fun to play with, and we enjoyed many live shows and songwriting competitions in CA. Played some great venues and recorded in some legendary studios like Fantasy and Different Fur. Used the fretless mostly with Joshua.
Now I'm focusing on rock more than others (though still playing other styles on my own). Most of my work is with two bands: 'Ultratone' (been with them a while) and 'Little Beirut,' (just joined them a few months ago). They're both alt/powerpop/rock-ish (you can check 'em out on iTunes, etc...). Little Beirut's third album is about to come out, and it's really cool.
Anywho, I use both basses quite a bit, though my Ric is newer to me than my Benavente, and I'm still drooling over it, so it gets most of the attention
.
Cheers to you, mate.

Re: What music/other basses do you play?
I've played my '67 Czech upright in jazz trio, quartet, quintet and big band situations, a local symphony orchestra, bluegrass gigs, as well as an alternative/punk thang (1996-2000; 2002-2005). These days, my upright lies on my music room futon only to be played occasionally. Now I use all of my electric basses regularly:
Fretless:
2008 Rick 4003 FL - strung with LaBella Deep Talkin' Bass flats
1973 Rick 4001 FL - strung with Rick Electro tapewounds
2006 Warwick Corvette Std FL - strung with Labella tapewounds
1991 Ken Smith 6-string FL - strung with TI jazz flats
1976 Fender Precision FL with maple board - strung with Fender tapewounds
1997 Fender Jazz CIJ FL - strung with Labella Deep Talkin' bass rounds; modified with Audere JZ-3 active control guts (I reach for this bass more than any other)
2008 Wishbass with aftermarket tone switch - strung with d'addario something or other rounds - this thing is cheap and not all that well made, but the mid growl is just fantastic for a $300 instrument. I will say that I have and will use it for any gig where balls is requested. Thick neck like an upright - nice!!
Fretted:
2007 DCM 75th Ann 4003 - strung with RIC rounds. I have to say, if I ever need to have a fretted sound (god forbid!), I rely on the best.
My main thing these days is aggressive groove. Apply it to prog, fusion, whathaveyou.

Can we have everything louder than everything else?
Re: What music/other basses do you play?
2 Warwicks. A Thumb and a Streamer. Looking around to get back into the Ric game!
Re: What music/other basses do you play?
See my signature, I have waaaay more Fenders than Rics. That's because I re-discovered Rics when I already had a significant number of 70's Fenders.
Since taking up the upright last year, I've been playing mainly classical. The bow is a new and exciting challenge. But I'm also listening a lot to jazz lately. With the band it's still rock'n'roll.

Welcome, Scott!

Re: What music/other basses do you play?
All original, kind of folk-rock-ish stuff (basically anything that anybody in the band writes that we like).
Left to right:
-Fretless Kala U-Bass solid polyurethane strings, piezo pickup under the bridge.
- My old fretless Frankenstein Gibson, built on what was originally a 1970 EBO - fingerboard changed 1971, body changed 1972, P-Bass pickup added at bridge 1973, stereo-wired, been through hell and back, etc. Tape wound Guild strings that have been on it since 1975 and still sound the same.
- Rickenbacker 2030 - body changed, bridge pickup moved back a little bit, pickguards added. Usually Chromes for flats, Half-rounds or SIT rounds at times.
- 1968-69 Hagstrom 8-string. No mods. You'll have to look in museums to find another one this clean, and it still may not be. TI Jazz Flats for both primary and octave strings.
- Fretless Pedulla Buzz, J/J Bartolini active pickups. No mods, Usually black round-wounds.
- Hofner factory fretless 5001/V63. No mods. Tape-wound Rotos or LaBellas (I have both, but can't remember which ones I finally settled on)
- Hofner 5001/V63 fretted. No mods. TI Jazz Flats

Todd, when you're tired of that little ol' cherry sunburst thing third from the right, give me a call.

Re: What music/other basses do you play?
Aside from my Ric, I also have a Fender Jazz Bass (Geddy Lee model), and a Hofner Icon Bass. That said, the Ric gets most of my playing time. I'll generally play the other two, when I just want to give the Ric a rest.

Jeff, I threaten to sell it every once in a while, but if I ever did I'd probably never have the money to replace it. It seems that every time I think I'm not getting much use out of it with the style of music that we play, somebody writes something where it fits in and adds a really neat sound to the mix.

It's kind of nice to be a non-gigging musician. All I do is record stuff and I have the entire arsenal here to choose from with no heavy lifting, long hours of driving or nights in motels involved. All I have to do is summon up enough energy to roll my chair across the room.
