This question has come up..we know that the product came from General Tire Corp..but would you know the origin of the word itself?
Thanks!

Wiktionary sez:
itself the third person singular, neuter, personal pronoun (the reflexive form of it, masculine himself, feminine herself, plural themselves)
1. (reflexive) it; A thing as the object of a verb or preposition that also appears as the subject
The door closed by itself
2. (emphatic) it; used to intensify the subject, especially to emphasize that it is the only participant in the predicate
The door itself is quite heavy.

I wonder if toluene played some part in the formulation. The "-ex" part could be a subliminal hint that this it was a "deluxe" product. I couldn't find much information on Google or Wikipedia -- mostly references to the Fender amps that used it.
