Saw an interesting vintage Ric today

At a local store, it was a '67 365 MG with three toasters, and a beautifully ambered mapleglo, crushed pearl inlays, a really sporty neck and radius'd fretboard, super sweet clean sound. The finish had checking on the back but it was still gorgeous. It had several mod's (1) bone nut (2) new Schaller tuners (3) a Gibson style 2-piece bridge (4) modified electronics with three switches (one for each pick-up) and a single volume and tone control. The pickguard was a Ric style, but only the bottom piece. Asking price was $1299. Aside from the mods, it was a great sounding, looking, and playing guitar.

Wow! The price sounds right, for sure.... if you can deal with the mods.

I love, love, LOVE my '67 365. It has the unbeatable vintage sound--because it's the real deal, and the super-slender neck feels like it was custom made to fit my hand.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble to return it to its original specs, or if the mods aren't a big deal, I would say go for it!

There's only a master volume ... three pickups and only two knobs ! Wouldn't such mods significantly devalue it ?

Hmmmm..... I don't know. Mine has never been modded and is nearly perfect except for some very minor nicks and dings.... which are certainly to be expected on something that's 42 years old!

In my opinion (which I know you didn't ask for ) if your going to play it, then it's a mega deal on a vintage Ric. The vintage neck itself is really unique and if you like them (which I do), there is nothing better.

As a collectable, with the mods you mentioned and without seeing it, who knows, probably not. But if you play out there is nothing cooler than showing up to gigs and playing vintage guitars. I always get comments about mine.

$1299? If it has the original case, toasters, truss rod cover, etc., the parts alone are probably worth it.

You mentioned a "two-piece Gibson bridge" does that mean it's been drilled/modified to fit a tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece?

If so, that significantly decreases the value......but $1299 is a deal no matter how you add it up.

Even with the mods (and the drilling) I'd think you probably won't see that price again...you can always buy correct repro (or even true vintage) parts over time and restore it, and have a skilled hand repair the stop-tail damage. Or keep the Gibson hardware on there:
