We don't get many tornadoes, but...

Post by cjj »

We get a LOT of hail...

From the National weather service - looks like it'll miss us...

... A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 715 PM MDT
for western valley and northeastern Phillips counties...

At 613 PM MDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to
indicate a severe thunderstorm capable of producing large damaging
hail up to baseball size...

I'm glad I live out here where all I have to worry about is a little earthquake once in a while.

Yeah, I lived in California for a lot of years. I'll take earthquakes over tornadoes and hail any day...

At least you have a little warning about tornados!

I did the earthquake thing back in the '80s, and yes, I did feel the SF quake in October '89. From Curry Village!

Well, that's South Dakota, about 600 miles south east of here. We're officially in Montana, but it's more like the Dakotas here than what most people think of as Montana, hence it's often called "West Dakota" in these parts.

Don't know if that big storm did any damage yet. Luckily, this area is very sparsely populated (about 0.4 people per square mile), the biggest damage is usually to crops...

I miss the New England and Dallas thunderstorms.... the ones that shake the house and make all the streetlights reset. Here in SoCal, when the ground starts shaking, I think to myself, "Is this a PRE-SHOCK for a bigger one?" and "Why the heck do I work on the 25th floor of a downtown hi-rise?". Most other bad weather (not that earthquakes are 'weather') gives a degree of predictability. And it has a beginning and an end. For us in the West, the destruction clock just keeps counting down... tick, tick tick... Tom

When I said I'd rather have earthquakes, I wasn't meaning to say they weren't a danger. It's just that I grew up in earthquake country and have been through lots of 'em so I guess I'm kind of used to them. Of course, I, like most of you folks in earthquake prone areas have never been through a "big one".

The biggest one I "rode out" was the 1989 Loma Prieta or "World Series" quake. I was in Santa Rosa at the time so we didn't get it nearly as bad as S.F., just lots of ceiling tiles and lights falling at work. Luckily I had a good heavy work bench to get under...

I lots folks don't realize it, but one of the most scariest weather phenomenon that I've ever come across is a tornado embedded within a hurricane.

BTW, right after the Northridge quake, a colleague of mine stated that she wanted to experience riding out a hurricane. I told her she was nuts.

I hear ya Joey, one of my favorite things about summers here on the east coast, I love a good summer thunderstorm, we actually hade a hurricane here back in late June, it was awesome esspecially that they are very rarely seen in south philly, im a storm freak, alot of times the weather gets you all excited about the storm comming in and then you dont really get the storm they are talking about but it does hit all the other surrounding counties, I absolutely love a good summer storm and watching telephone poles bending in the wind, wouldnt trade it for nothing, but thats just me....lol

If you like thunderstorms - St. Pete/Tampa has some of the best, and I grew up in "Tornado Alley".
