What's In Your Studio?

I just ordered this yesterday evening.


I'm an old TASCAM guy from way back. I used to record on a Portastudio 244. So I think the learning curve on this unit should be pretty gentle.

Oh, and I got myself one of these for my birthday.


This unit is real handy for generating practice tracks, song writing, and that sort of thing.

I used a Roland VS-2480 for several years and got some great sounds with it. Last year I moved onto an iMac using Logic with a Presonus Firebox and am very happy with the setup. For mics, I've got a pile of SM 57's and a Groove Tubes condenser which sounds great.

The pres are okay, the good thing about them is that they are really low noise and transparent, the bad thing about them is that they are transparent

The audiofire is simply the best interface I ever heard, it's not a cognitive dissonance as I searched and searched for the best AD/DA out there with 8-12 tracks and I wasn't on budget.

As for mics - I have an SM58, Beta57a and AKG C214, additionally we have 3 AKG D880 and a single D112 (owned by our drummer) and our guitarist donated his condencer as well, I forgot which brand (I never see it - it's permenantly stated between the drummer and the wall as his right mic).

If I had a Mac, I'd go the direct to computer recording method, too. Alas, I'm over on the Dark Side, using a PC. I've heard nothing but tales of woe & intrigue concerning recording direct on a PC. I'm really looking forward to working with that TASCAM DP02

These days I use an iMac 20" with GarageBand, for now. My interface is a Universal Audio LA-610, with Audio Technica AT4021 and Audix OM-5 mics.

For portable recording I have a Marantz PMD661 that I can plug the 4021s into or use the internal mics, which do sound quite good.

On a brighter note: The DP-02 arrived today. And the controls, menu, ...the whole works look like a bigger version of the DR-07. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. So.....looks like I've got some work to do. Fun!

Jim: it doesn't matter if you'll be recording on a PC or a MAC, the recording and mixing software is pretty much the same unless you choose to use garage band, but pro tools, cubase, nuendo, tracktion - they all run on both MAC and PCs.

I just bumped up from Pro Tools LE (002) to an HD1 system on my Mac Pro. Which meant that I had to invest in preamps, so I opted for the Focusrite Octopre, which has enough nice, clean inputs that I could get rid of my patch bay. That also meant that I needed some faders, so I got the Command|8.

Mics are Shure SM57 and a pair of 4.1s, a few Audix (D1, D2 and D4, I think) and an AT 4030 that I use for vocals, going through an ART Tube MP.

I record on a PC, using a Tascam interface and Cubase. I do everything in the box with software. I use a modded cheap ribbon mic and a homemade tube LDC. I recently ventured into MIDI and bought a keyboard, which has opened up a world of fun stuff. Now I can do anything from a simple penny whistle to a full score.
