The 4005 is not coming back.......but what if....

Post by mp_me »

Rickenbacker has mixed and matched bodies, necks etc....to come up with new models before.....
Why not a 330 body and a 4003 neck?
Like a Rickenbacker Starfire bass!

A bass guitar version of the 381 has been a fantasy of mine for a while.

Oh yeah, that looks better than a 4005 IMO. That would be a stylish bass!

I actually had a bass like that back about 1975. I bought a Mapleglow Capri and had a fretless, short-scale bass neck built and installed on it. It looked much less "over-inflated" than a 4005. Of course, if I'd just left the Capri alone and stuck it under the bed it would now be worth a bundle, but at that time it wasn't much of an investment. I think I paid something like $250 for the it and a couple hundred more to have it modified and refinned. I eventually sold it during some period when I wasn't playing much and needed cash, but I've always missed it and don't even have photos of it other than this one (it's that light colored sliver at the extreme right of the photo - but check out the headstock on the "Tele" over on the left in the stand). Missing it was a great part of the motivation to do a 350-style body transplant on my 2030.

Nah, the 4003 headstock doesn't look right with that body shape. The bass headstock for such a bass should look like the 330 headstock. The shapes fit together better than the 4003 pompadour headstock does with the 330 body. The pompador type headstock works for the 400X series because the headstock complements the body shape, especially wrt the top horn on the body.

Of course if it's really done properly, the body should be double bound, with a bound neck, headstock, and sound hole, and have triangle inlays on the fretboard, of course. :)

This could put me over the edge. I've been trying so hard to do the responsible thing, this would finish me.

We actually had him build a tele-style body for the Capri neck out of Sycamore wood (medium light color with lots of small spots, kind of like blonde silky oak). That guitar is still out there somewhere, but after I left the band, somebody in Chicago cleaned out the van one night and took it, along with most of the other stuff.
