Picked up a Holy Grail guitar
Today I picked up one of my holy grails: the Fender Bass VI. It's a CIJ reissue from the 90's. Very clean condition with the case. I got an awesome deal on this piece...much cheaper than any of the Japanese ones that I've seen on the 'Bay. It plays so well and it sounds amazing. It has a wide variety of sounds ranging from the rumbling baritone to a very punchy bass sound. To celebrate, the first two songs that I played were "Sunshine of Your Love" and "I Feel Free" followed by some Beach Boys.

I love those basses. Congrats.

The ones that I have played have been "More than the sum of their parts"
A good score for sure!

One of the funnest guitars I ever owned. I did a whole bunch of recording with it and it was unbeliveable! I had a '63 and couldn't realy afford to keep it, sadly. I am either going to make a parts one or look for a CIJ in 2011.

Yep, USACG would be my first choice. About two weeks ago they had a VI body for $99, and I passed on it like a dope.

Coming up. I had some lesson planning to do last night. I'm going to get it together on that tonight along with some bigger group shots.

Wow, those are way cool, and really let you rethink your playing when doing songs you already know on bass and guitar.

Re: Picked up a Holy Grail guitar
My only quibble with playing these as basses (as opposed to baritones) is that the high E string can be a bit twangy for regular bass parts, so one must revert to playing up the neck for high-register parts to get a thicker tone.
For fast riffs, double stops, and chords they are superb.

I do have to say that it is a pretty awesome sounding instrument. Since I'm primarily on guitar, it's a really good fit. I've had something similar for sometime which is a CIJ Jaguar Bass VI Special that came out a while back. It's very cool too, but it just didn't have the VIBE. This is still taking some getting used to but it is opening up some bigger sonic possibilities.

The Cure features a bass VI on some of their material, to great effect!
Re: Picked up a Holy Grail guitar
Isn't that the same bass that John & George used? Oh what was the name of the band that they were in? It's on the tip of my tongue.
