A while back I think there was a thread discussing the type of rubber that was used on guitar stands. Someone had made some kind of cloth covers for their's. Anyone remember this? If so, are there any pics? my wifes pretty good with a sewing machine, and I want her to make me some.

I wrap all the parts of a stand (top and bottom hoops and the little supporting rubber block at the bottom) that get in touch with the instruments with cotton self-adhesive tennis racket wrap strips (lots of colours to choose from, mine is red) and finish off the tips with matching coloured cotton clothes. When the tips are finished, there won't be any sharp edges of the rubber tubing that can scratch the instruments sometimes.

I recently acquired one of those guitar cases thingies that opens up into a guitar stand for 7, They also make them for 3 and five guitars.Very portable and the axe sits on nothing but plush velvet.

Scott, My Wife cover my stands with the same material you find in guitar cases. She cut it to size and used a glue gun

For Andy and Paul: Thanks for the innovative suggestions on keeping our Rickenbacker finish safe.
As I follow-up question for both of you, does the "safer" smooth surface you have created hold the instrument in place as well as the rubber or is there a greater tendency for it to slip forward and fall off the bottom of the stand?

Peter, you do need to be careful with the placement of your guitar. The placement needs to be more of a straight up position – if you know what I mean… I can say that I have never had one slip off (knock on wood).
Hope this helps!

Andy,
Just looking at that last picture, I wish John Hall would bring back the 4001v63. I got a v63 in Fireglo and always wanted one in Mapleglo as well... I guess time will tell

Peter,
My modified stands hold the basses pretty safely.
I "close" the top hoop when the babies are on the stands. They lean back a little and are like 85-87 degrees to the floor. The bottom hoops are like 5" long and prevent the instruments from slipping off.
Scott,
Thanks for your kind words.

Andy, where does your wife find the material that goes inside of guitar cases ? I've been looking in fabric stores in New York and California, and I can't find it anywhere. Not only would I like it to cover my guitar stands, but I would also like to line the interior of a Calzone ATA flight case with that material.

Hey Joey, She got this stuff from a place here in Jersey call The Rag Shop. This stuff is probably a little thicker than what you would find in a guitar case, but when we picked it out it was what most resembled and felt like the fabric in a case. You could probably tell from the first pic that this stuff is pretty thick. Actually I’m thinking about lining my flight case also. First I need to change the shape from a P-bass to a Rick.
Hope this helps Joey – good luck!
Yeah Matt, I hear you. I played a C64 a couple of times, not long enough to compare the sound difference (if any). I’m definitely partial to my V63. She’s real sweet, the horseshoes appear to be magnetized too! It’s a March 85 and I’m the original owner. Almost sold it once – don’t know what the hell I was thinking about. I still get that sinking feeling when I think about that.
Cheers
