1968 4001 Bass excerpt - rough mix

Post by walker »

This is just a drum & bass mix for the sake of experimenting with different amps & mic placement, etc. Thought I'd post it for review before the unnecessary clutter of the guitars and vocals are added. HA!

1968 4001 test mix

The bass tracks are a combination of mics + direct.

Aaaahh... sorry guys. I had the track marked as "hidden" so it wouldn't be visible on the page. I didn't know it would disable the link, too.

Try 'er now.

Sounds great by itself, but I wonder if the "meat" of the bass will get buried by the geetars and vocals.

Yes. We shall see. I'll post the mix of the whole song once it's done.

Nice little ditty Mark! Shawn is drumming? Sometimes, depending on the tune, the reduction of the 'meat' of the bass provides for a nice effect... barely audible crispness can establish an effect one might experience with good food or beer... it draws you in looking for more without really realizing that is happening. Looking forward to the final mix.

MEAT REDUCTION??? Not on your life! I would elect for meat enhancement, but never reduction!

But seriously, I would anticipate the bass fitting in the mix the same as it would with the mixes I've done in the past.

Shawn isn't on this recording yet. He's actually a guitarist, and this song came to be from a jam we were kicking around a good 15 years ago. He started out on a riff, and I followed along. That particular jam is now the verse section of the song, and I wrote everything else around it. Shawn (aka Yogi) currently lives in Seattle. I sent a rough mix to him including samples of his original guitar work, and he's going to record the new parts that he comes up with and send them back to me. He says he's thinking of some vocal parts, too, so it will be interesting to see how this all comes together.

Here's the original recording that started it off:

Yogi bit - original jam

Yogi starts his riff, then you hear me fishing for notes on the bass.

This one, to be exact:
