360v64 vs. 360c63

Post by tomt3 »

I own a 360v64. Can anyone tell me the difference between this and a 360c63?

If you're referring to the six string variety, there were only 60 360 C63 guitars built; 40 in FG and 20 in JG, and those were only built for the Japanese market to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Rickenbaker's Japanese Distributor's, Shinsedo, founding.

That model is X braced internally, with the vintage style 9" or 9" 1/2 fretboard radius, Scatterwound 7.4K ohm toaster pickups, and some other period correct specifications, including slightly more rounded at the end cutaway body horns. IT also came with an "R" tailpiece.

The 360 V64 looks similar, but it has Rick's modern style internal body routing, a flatter 10" fretboard radius, "hot" 12K ohm toasters, and sharper, more pointed body horns in some cases, depending on the year the guitar was built, as well as a trapeze tailpiece. It was also made for about 14-15 years, and not a limited edition model.

Both guitars have the vintage TRC, 21 frets, full-width inlays, a vintage profile headstock, and vintage style tuners, and vintage knobs.

The C63 have the red dot markers along the neck binding also whereas the v64 is the normal black.

Thanks. I assume the same specs for the 12-string version. Were they produced in larger quantities?

WRT 12 strings, the 360/12 C63 is a current, regular production model. They are only available in a FG, or JG finish. The 12 sring models have a trapeze tailpiece.

The 360 V64/12 shares the same general specs as the six string, except for those specific to a 12 string model. The 350 V64 models were available in any finish available from RIC the year the guitar was made, so in addition to the familiar FG anf JG finishes, there are V64s in Midnight Blue (MID), Red, Sea Green(SG), Mapleglo(MG), et cetera. IIRC, for some years the 12 sring headstocks on the V64 models are larger than those on the 360/12 C 63.

I don't know about the V64/12 but the C63's have a 7 1/2" fretboard radius.

The 360 c 63 also has the aged colored inlays, and a 3 piece top, and the more exact shading on the fireglow finish to the originals made in 1963.

The 360v64 is the one you own.

The 360c63 is the other one.
