Headstocks

Post by coolhandjjl »

Headstock sizes were mentioned recently, I believe it was in the 4003 vs 4001c64 thread. Looking at the standard facing 4001v63 headstock, it seems taller than a 4001/4003. Every now and then, I see a post about basses and neck dive. Is the v63 headstock problematic in that regard?

No, not really. 4001/3/4/5 basses have not been known to be neck divers, so the change in headstock size and shape really isn't a factor. It is more connected with the manufacturing dates. Headstocks in the '70s were kinda short and stocky, earlier ones were longer. Current ones are in between the extremes.

I've used two V63's for gigging since 2005 and have never had an issue with them being unbalanced.

You can add 4002 to that list: with the mini-Schallers, neck dive is definitely NOT an issue!
