I was blessed with an opportunity to play the Dagmar guitars at the Montreal Guitar Show last year. These are absolutely incredible instruments. The checkered sides are all done piece by piece and cut to shape the curve before they are glued up. It is not carved afterward. The tone of these instruments is fantastic, warm yet crystal clear. Each note in any chord is very well defined. They are very light to hold and extremely responsive. They sell for $10K-$24K depending on the options you want.

In person, I find them very,very fine looking and would love to own one.

Very cool Dean, I would LOVE to give one of these a spin. I think the look is super cool - the only thing that bugs me is the jagged soundholes.

I find they truly suit the overall visual when you see them in person. He makes some with a more traditional f hole as well as a cat's eye shape as well. I really dug the vibe of this model though. Very jazz/rockabilly fusion. They are amazingly resonant when played acoustically, Didn't really need an amp on the show floor.

BTW, if anyone is ever in Montreal during the Jazz Festival, plan to attend the MGS. There are many opportunities to play very rare boutique instruments, through rare boutique amps in sound rooms, and speak with the luthiers that create them. I was able to try a Manzer acoustic, these Dagmars, a Dingwall prototype tele style electric guitar (he is known for his basses) and many, many others. In fact i ordered the first production Dingwall Custom 1 guitar right at the show. It is a great couple of days. The 2011 edition is shaping up to be another great weekend. I'd love to see a PW booth there someday.

No, he only uses the Novax system on is basses at the moment. He is experimenting with a 7 string that will have the Novax system on it. My bassist has one of his Combustion models. I found that the fan frets were not even an issue when getting used to the bass. A far greater issue for me was the 5th string ( I keep thinking it's an E). As I understand it, the real benefit of the fan frets is on a guitar that plays nicer with different scale lengths, such as a 5 string bass, or a 7 string guitar, where the low B playability benefits from a longer scale length than the G (or high e in the case of the guitar).

The reason I fell in love with the Custom 1 was that the minute I picked it up it felt as though I had been playing it for 4o years. I did not have to ""get used to it" to find sweet spots or anything. The tone was absolute killer, in the Gretsch Billy Bo genre. The cutaway is sized so that when I bottom my fret hand on it, my third finger naturally lands on the last fret. The fit and finish are in the same class as our favourite US made guitars as well. The neck on the Custom 1 is very similar to my 620, which I adore, and the guitar was not much heavier than the 660/12.
