Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
Great news!
I have been playing these for a few months on my 4003 and 4003FL and I think folks will really like what they do for a Ric. They are a bit bright for a flat out of the box, but mellow nicely! I know Cassius & I will be interested to hear others impressions. Now go and getcha some!

I, too, have been using them, but not as long as you and Joshua. I pieced together my set a few weeks ago from 9050L and M sets. So far, I am loving the tone, balance and feel of these strings. This is an especially exciting time for me (and others, I assume) with having snagged a RIHS and now being able to stock up on CLs.Low End Lover wrote:I have been playing these for a few months on my 4003 and 4003FL...

I just got word about this link from Joshua. I was going to unlock unlock the Flats thread and have him post it here. But since it's already posted here, carry on in this thread. Hopefully it stays civil.

+1. Thanks for catching this thread Joey.rickenbrother wrote:I just got word about this link from Joshua. I was going to unlock unlock the Flats thread and have him post it here. But since it's already posted here, carry on in this thread. Hopefully it stays civil.
My take on these flats: really mellow tone with some initial brightness that quickly fades, great smooth feel on the fingers, medium tension (CL set), extremely well-balanced from string to string (again CL set). The green silk looks cool too and the voiced length stops just after the nut on a Ric, which is the ideal way for it to be. I have played the old Fender flats on multiple basses too and would say these are a bit mellower-sounding and smoother-feeling overall. I know some people prefer the old ones and that's cool too!
On my band's Facebook page you can hear a couple of examples of these strings under the "Band Profile" tab. The songs are called "American Kids" and "I'm Like That". The tone (as I hear it) is warm and fat and stands out in the mix. The signal path is a 4003FL, neck pickup soloed (4002 bridge pickup), Aphex Punch Factory with low compression, into the board.

Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
So how would you go about piecing together a 5 string set? Or does the 9050-5L basically cover that option?

Not sure about the balance, but I wouldn't use a B string that was under .130 gauge.Tarrbot wrote:So how would you go about piecing together a 5 string set? Or does the 9050-5L basically cover that option?

Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
Stupid question.
Anyone know what the tension is on these things?
I once had an older set of Fender Flats (I don't remember what they were) but they were like bridge cables.
The 4001 didn't like 'em.
Just want to play it safe.
Thanks!

Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
These are around 35-40 lbs/string (my guesstimate) which is comparable to most rounds. They play almost like TIs (very smooth).
Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
They're comparable to Chromes, imo. I went from D'Addario ECB84s to the 9050s and I've noticed no change in neck relief. Of course, I don't have them stringed on a 4001; I'm working with a 2009 4003.ajish4 wrote:Anyone know what the tension is on these things?

So they play like TIs if TIs were balanced. How do they sound compared to TIs?cassius987 wrote:These are around 35-40 lbs/string (my guesstimate) which is comparable to most rounds. They play almost like TIs (very smooth).

Cool, thanks guys...guess I'll give 'em a try.
It's about that time of year to order some sets of strings so we'll see.
Much appreciated!

Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
I'm very tempted to get a set of these. For now, I'm am really content with D'Addario Chromes ECB80 on a 4001FL and Chromes ECB84 on a 4004Cii.

Re: Fender 9050CLs Available
I'm not a good person to ask because I don't particularly love TIs like some people do. But I actually think these have some similar qualities in tone... They seem to have a lot of the "oomph" of a good flat combined with some of the glassy high-end of TIs. Or that's what I hear anyways. The high end on these wears off sooner with these however so eventually they just play and sound like good ol' flats. Unlike the description above they are certainly not bridge cables, they are very easy to play.coolingitdown wrote:How do they sound compared to TIs?
