i tried r-o-s for the first time yesterday after getting a cable from POTR

ran my 360 and 381 6s through a princeton reverb clone and a supro replica

clean settings with equalizer on the princeton and janglebox on the supro

oh my!

the ultimate r-o-r setup must be a ric 12 str with a janglebox on each amp!

So whaddaya do when you decide to solo a pickup when you're running ROS and one channel drops out?

One channel doesn't exactly drop out as in dead silent. There's still some cross-talk for lack of a better, more technical term between the pickups. And anyway, that's what the JB-2 is for. You'd step on the jangle boost button, and Bob's yer uncle.

I thought the point of ROS was to run both signals independently to craft a new baseline sound. I guess, though, there's nothing wrong with dropping out one part of the signal for solo sections, etc. You might want a volume pedal on the channel to solo to keep the output where you want it.

I think ROS is a very practical (and great-sounding) tool but it does take some forethought.

Larry and Jim play guitars.

I ran ROS for awhile, but eventually realized that running a mono signal into a stereo effects processor sounds more impressive due to the "3D" effect that things like chorus, phasing, flanging, and slap back delay produces.

My comment doesn't apply to guitars?

Absolutely--that's an artistic choice you have to make. The alternative is equally cool though because it's basically two guitars in one, since the pickups don't "talk" to each other at all.

I read the bassline with a different meaning...

I don't use too many effects and love the ROS capabilities.... just find that sometimes small venues don't have the room for the extra equipment. also there is the issue of switching to non ROS basses (i.e., 4004L) and having the non-band sound man understand what is going on. Even after you get done telling him and writing it out for him!

I'd be curious to hear from any bassists who are using ROS, what gear they're using and what types of music they play. Having just taken delivery of my 4003 today, I plan to experiment with ROS @ home and then try it out on a gig soon.

Bass amp – Carvin with 2x15 cab & Treble amp – Peavey Delta bass with 4/10 cab. I typically get the amps to be the same loudness - volume for both pups max on the bass. Usually set to a little louder than I will need for the room. Then I cut back the volume a tad on both pups at the bass controls & start blending for tone and pickup balance. I don’t use a lot of effects but if desired I think I usually run them off the treble pickup. The sound guy has to understand what is going on with your two amps.

I use a pair of SansAmps, an RBI and an RPM, these go to a Rane AC22B crossover. I take the high channels and mix them, same with the lows, through a custom mixer then run these through separate channels of a Carvin DCM1540L. The high channel goes to a pair of Ampeg 2x10s, the low to a pair of Ampeg 1x15s.

Here's a cheesy diagram:

Neck pickup - Carvin 600 watt head with crossover running mids to a 2x10 and lows to a 1x15. This setup is kept clean for a nice, solid underlying bass tone.
Bridge pickup (with cap engaged) - Vox guitar amp. I run fuzz or other effects through this channel when desired.

Unfortunately, that Vox needs a little bit of work, and I'm low on funds, so I haven't really gotten to test drive this setup in a band situation. But it sounded pretty good when I was tooling around with it by myself!
