Wow! Long time, indeed! Welcome back.

So...I can't tell...This bass has obviously been re-finished, but...was it in clear or some sort of an off-white color?

It's been refinished (professionally, obviously) to a nice Cream colour.

Asking price is £5,000, (or $8,300..)

A great investment if you're a huge Squire fan maybe? -Puts any 4001CS to shame when you can play the genuine article!!

This bass is in the registry under serial# DGXXXX. I doubt that it's really one number away from Squires. For one thing, the bridge pickup surrounds are different. While these were cut pretty randomly by hand back in the day, I don't think two basses made back to back would have different parts on them. My 4001S is DC193, and it had the same surround on it that Squire's has with the longer front flange and wider ducktail at the rear, as evidenced by the holes drilled in the bass and the "shadow" left on the clear finish.

If the bass was really a DC xxx it would have an earlier small-taper to the surround.

Even so, if I were CS I'd get this bass as a spare. It's not far off from his in looks..!

The space in the "tooth" over the mute was a result of the process of the original cast-aluminum tailpiece. It had something to do with how the casting was made in the mold. When they went to the improved cast-zinc tailpiece in the mid-1970s, the mold was different and didn't have this "slot." I can't quite picture that in my head, but that's what I was told by Rick guru Ted Staberow who probably got that info from Dick Burke, long-time employee at RIC. When RIC started producing the V and C series basses, they either had a new mold made to produce the vintage space, or they simple cut/ground the tooth to produce the slot for the vintage look.
