Has the material used to make the mute pad always been foam rubber?
I could be wrong, but it seems like I remember my '72 having a felt material for the mute pad??

It's always been neoprene, never felt. It's the center cutout from the guitar pickup mounting ring.

Wow! Thanks John!
How efficient. That's what I call making good use of time AND material.

It seems like the stuff in the 70's was a different density though. While utilizing the cut out piece from the guitar pads is a good idea, the piece ends up being too wide and "poofy". If they were neatly cut in half, they'd be the same size the early ones were and less..."poofy". I get two bass mute pads by cutting the sides of the guitar pickup foam. I also have the mute bar chrome plated.
