Just Go Spit Out Another Lie by Spokraket

Post by Jonesey »

Here's a new one we finished recently. Once again we did the instruments live but this time we recorded on a nice early 80's 4-track tape recorder at 7 1/2 ips which really made everything sound warmer and way more defined than before. Our previous singer got some tinitus issues and unfortunately had to quit because of it whch was a great shame.
Lacking other alternatives I took the vocals and added shitloads of reverb as I'm not really a singer.

Alright, so it's Bjørn on a CIJ Jazzmaster through a Vox Pathfinder, Hans Christian on Epiphone Höfner-inspired bass, Michael on old Sonor drums and me on my beloved Rickenbacker 330 and some reverb-heavy mumbling.

There's another new song on the site too, but I can't afford a 360/12 with toasters so it's done on a cheap Danelectro DC12, so not really kosher

Enough said.

Cool sounds, Jonathan. I like how the music has a chance to breathe and set the atmosphere before the vocals come in, and I like the space between verses. But that reverb... too much!!! You've overcompensated. Trust me - your voice can't warrant the need to be covered up to such a degree!

Essentially what Mark said… I think it has a very warm feel to it. I liked it! So how do we get the reverse copy so we can hear the inverted words at the end? Is this yet another clue to the ‘Paul is dead’ caper…?

Thanks a million Mark and Tom :D
Well, I really like to use lots of reverb on vocals, but if I ever redo it I'll make a split channel with a clean track as well as a reverb heavy one - makes it easier to fine adjust the amount.

The reverse stuff is from a speech at a silver wedding aniversary that was on the tape already (none of us never met the people talking) and we didn't feel like deleting it as it sounded kindda cool. The effect comes from two sides played at the same time "against" each other as the tape recorder just play one way. I love small accidents like that

very nice!!! I mean this as a compliment and hope it is taken that way. your sound is as if you took all of my favorite bands from the late 70's and early 80's(Joy Division, the Cure, a touch of the Smiths and just a dash of Bauhaus/Tones On Tail) and put them in a blender and made a musical smoothie, of which I want several large gulps until I have brain freeze!!!I love the vocals on this one,it sounds like it was recorded in a cave!! again this is a compliment. keep up the retro-wave goodnness!!!!! :D :D :D
♪♫♪♫I need new strings, these ones have a bunch of dang wrong notes on 'em ♫♪♫♪

8) 8) Very cool....

I hear what Tom and Mark are saying, but I think the vocal reverb would work fine if you just adjusted the eq to boost the highs and cut the lows.

We're into most of these bands as well - The Smiths was a brilliant band, but I'm clumsy as frack compared to Johnny Marr. Thanks for the words mate, I most certainly took it as a compliment :)
I guess Antipodean is right about that removing some lows on the vocals would be good. I'll try it ASAP and see what happens.
Soon there'll be an album, hopefully on vinyl. We're working really hard mixing and recording these days. The next challenge would be overdubbing vocals on improvisations, a crazy task cause it will easily sound either too messy or too calculated.

BTW, the cave effect is made using a cheapo Marshall reverb pedal. It's **** but I love it :D
