Bangles '80s albums
I know I'm either going to be made fun of or have crickets in this thread, but here we go...
Last week, after years of listening to my parents listening to them and finding out the frontman plays Rics as her main instrument, I decided to pull the trigger and get all three of the Bangles Columbia years albums, All Over the Place, Different Light and Everything. My parents have owned numerous copies of Greatest Hits and I bought The Essential in late 2004, but finally wanted to see if there was anything that topped the hits. I have not opened or even seen the Amazon box, so I will post reviews later, but I feel I've been rocking with Tom Petty, The Beatles, The Who, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and various other dudes for years now, time to let the chicks take over.
I became hooked when I saw The Bangles installment of Behind the Music three weeks ago.
If you are a Bangles freak (HOWARD "AITCH" BISHOP!), and you own anything from all the albums to just one compilation to a few songs on your iTunes to even a 350SH or any other guitar Susanna or Vicki has played before, let us know!

Jake, if you can find it, I suggest looking for the first EP (five songs, IIRC, on I.R.S.)with their first bassist Annette Zilinskas. Cool stuff on that one as well.
Somewhere I have a "mini CD" with three of the five songs from that EP.

Yeah, I'm a long time Bangles fan, especially of Vicki. I have most or all of the lps, CDs, and DVDs. I've seen them in concert at the Greek Theatre twice and once in a free (and informal) set at Universal Studios, back before they had any hits. The four of them just sang and they had a guy (David ?) playing an acoustic guitar. They did a killer four part harmony version of the Beatle's "Yes It Is". There were maybe 100 people in the crowd. They hung out at the park for an hour after their set. No security. Nobody bothered them. I have some blurry (manual focus; too much zoom) pictures somewhere. This was about 6 months after their "Goin' Back to Liverpool" MTV video. I'm thinking about doing a cover of "Hazy Shade of Winter" that would combine elements of the Simon & Garfunkel and the Bangles versions. Tom

Or, if you can find it, Rainy Day, an album of covers from 1984 with various Paisley Underground alumni:

SERIOUSLY??? I had you pegged! You're gonna need to meet my laptop at SCARF... Collin did, and he heard some early Who recordings available on Deluxe Editons, the Maximum R&B set and Odds and Sods for the first time. Seriously, we could call it How RRF Met My Laptop.ozover50 wrote:Actually I don't have one Bangles song anywhere..... CD, iPod, PC..... zip, nada!

But it's understandable. She's always been good looking, and she's become the person I think of when I think of a 350, be it a standard version or her version.
As for the Continental Drifters, Rod, they were mentioned in the Behind the Music special. I was a newborn when she was in New Orleans...dang it!
And Tom, I'm a fan of Vicki, too. She's kinda like a female George Harrison to me. Although I've seen no pictures of her using a Ric, music suggests she's used Susanna's Ric 620/12 in the studio. She's played some killer Gretsches and Fenders, so she gets some coolness points there.
Re: Bangles '80s albums
Can somebody recommend a Bangles CD for me as a starting point to appreciating their music? Please choose one that has plenty of that 620/12 on it!

I do actually have the 'Under The Covers' (Volume 1) that she did with Matthew Sweet.

Hi Robert. Start with Greatest Hits and go from there. Maybe you could go out to a site like Amazon and just sample songs from each of the albums. Lots of good harmonies and jangled, 60's influenced pop music. And, the ladies are not too tough on the eyes. Re: Bangles '80s albums
I started with Greatest Hits, then The Essential Bangles, the former outdoing the latter and stayed with that since '04. I kept meaning to buy the Columbia three pack of the '80s albums, and didn't do that til a week ago.
The boxed set came in, and I enjoy it. All Over the Place is a kick ash record and captures what the band wanted to be famous for. Different Light is okay some great stuff and some average stuff. The best song on that album is Vicki's "Return Post". Everything is the White Album of The Bangles, some good stuff, some GREAT stuff and some garbage. Vicki said "Eternal Flame" is a great song, but it wasn't any real band involvement and Whitney Houston could have had a hit with it. I hope to acquire the '04 return Doll Revolution pretty soon here, as I've heard it captures the original spirit of the band, similar to All Over the Place.
