MTM not dubbed; Roger's vocal and a XII

Post by libratune »

Here's a rare find (for me anyway): an early Byrds vid featuring a live vocal of Roger doing MTM -- with Gene Clark holding (playing?) a Fender XII:

Toward the end of the video someone finally turned up David Crosby's mic.

Cool clip! That XII looks like it has white knobs, like the Electric XII prototype Carl Wilson used. Gene's has the rotary knob though and it almost looks as though there's no peghead decal.

Thanks for posting this clip. It looks like Jim is singing live to a recorded instrumental track. Is it just my perception or does he appear to be a bit buzzed? His vocals have that little 'relaxed' lag to them, which may either be intentional or the result of some extra THC in his system. Chris Hillman's record for never smiling on film or video also remains intact. All of the bird houses were a nice touch, too. Great find..... Tom
It's a Byrd, it's a playin'..........

Tom, I didn't even realize the Byrd-house theme until you mentioned it.

There were some talented set designers back in the day . . .

Very creative, indeed. Upon watching/listening to it again, I'm of the opinion that the actual original instrumental tracks were used, with the vocals mixed out. The instrumentation/mix sounds too close to the 'record' (and the Wrecking Crew) to have been recorded especially for the show. I still think that Jim looks as "S" faced as EVH on the "Jump" video.
