I watched the Time Machine concert from Cleveland on VH1 last night. If your a RUSH fan, this is a must see.

I watched it last night on Palladia.

Have to say I detest Rush. I think of them as one of the worst bands that ever reached a level of success. (Only Bon Jovi is worse in my eyes.) Twenty minute "songs" called "Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage" that take up entire sides of albums are absolutely pretentious, stupid, and downright hilarious and embarrassing. Rush is anti-rock and roll. Everything I love about rock and roll, Rush gives the opposite.

Having said that. I watched the Cleveland concert last night and enjoyed it. I always knew the three players were top notch musicians. I have always loved their song "Subdivisions" because the skill of the musicians really makes that song move. And last night in that video concert Rush just played good, solid songs. (There was an instrumental number where the guys played a thousand notes a minute that made me again realize why I hate Rush.) Overall it was a great concert with the three band members really shining. It was so great it even turned an anti-Rush fan like me into a fan.

I have to say I liked most of all Alex Lifeson' playing. Lifeson's sound was something I always enjoyed. He is not blues based which is a plus in my book and he actually creates a sound that I think is a forerunner of new wave guitar. I know U2's the Edge was inspired by Tom Verlaine and Keith Levene, but Lifeson's tone and sound sure does sound like it could have been an influence. These dark, echoey single notes and then crashing chords...really great stuff.

For me, Rush always got bogged down in pretention, these BIG IDEAS that really just ended up sounding silly. Had they let Lifeson shine more and kept their songwriting structured (a la "Subdivisions"), ohh, that would have been great. Ultimately Rush are a very talented group that let their talent run away with them. They needed a producer who could have reined them in. But that Cleveland concert video I saw last night sure was great to watch. Good guys playing very well.

I was a pretty rabid RUSH fan back in the day,,not so much now.

I really admire the stuff they pull off as a 3 piece though. This "Time Machine" concert has alot of footage of Geddy doing the "trifecta". Playing bass, bass pedals and singing all at the same time. Amazing.

I agree, Dane. Love the long tunes! But not everyone has the patience for album side pieces. I'm guessing he's not a fan of similar pieces by Yes...

I saw that show last September (Time Machine tour) and it was great, a true return to form for Rush. Best part was Alex's guitar playing, he didn't miss a note, worst part was the absence of the Ric bass tones on the classic tunes.

I hate the use of the word hate in describing things like this. I hate what the Nazis did - I don't like Gansta Rap - I like other rap just not the negativity of that brand. Agreed Dane. Obviously Rush entertains a whole bunch of folks, as do many performers and musicians. But to go around uttering things like "..absolutely pretentious, stupid, and downright hilarious and embarrassing. Rush is anti-rock and roll." is kinda negative in its own right and unnecessary. Plus it is kind of insulting to those who like the band and its music. Just say I don't get it and move on.

Just expressing my opinion. Should all opinions be glowing and loving?
And if you or anyone were to say you hate The Beatles, why should I be insulted? Lots of people hate The Beatles, the NY Yankees, John Carpenter films, and other things I love and I do not feel insulted at all. By the way, I did say even though I hate Rush I thouroughly enjoyed their concert video.

Are you? To me it sounds like you are simply parroting the standard "rock cliche" about progressive music without ever listening to it for yourself. Interestingly enough, once you listened to the music itself (and not some critic), you found yourself enjoying it. Maybe there's a lesson we could all learn here.

Unfortunately I listened to a lot of prog rock. Had a relative who worked for Atlantic records and he used to send us all the Yes, Genesis, ELP albums. I'd listen to those albums, but I sure didn't like them. "Pirates" off ELP's "Works" was the only tune I enjoyed.

You say I dismiss Rush because of my dislike for progressive rock. Funnily enough, I really never associted Rush with progressive rock. Sure they had some aspects of prog rock, but when I first heard Rush it was because they actually had some nice short songs that were played on the radio. Yes, Genesis, and ELP when they were doing their prog rock thing certainly never did.
