Epi Riviera P93 pickups, considering upgrading

Post by jdogric12 »

Yo... any suggs on some P90's for a three-pickup Riviera? I got a P93 and hate the tone. Are the Duncans much better? Also, same q re wiring options?

The "Surf 90s" from GFS are all the rage on the Gretsch forums for a killer P90 pickups in a hollow/semi-hollow body. They are priced right and folks seem to dig 'em, but have never heard one myself. I got some dual lipstick humbuckers that sounded sweet in a Dano 12 I used to have though. Just about everybody makes a p90 type pickup, and the prices can get pretty scary, especially when you are needing 3.

As far as wiring options, you can always drop a 6 way rotary DPDT switch in place of a tone pot and wire it up like a strat or all the phase options you want. An RWRP middle pickup of course will give you humbucking options in multiple pickup positions, or humbucking 90s with 4 wires can yield all kinds of tones. As far as the pickup selector toggle, you can just wire that up like a 420 or a kill switch or.....

Well, it's moot... the P93 is spending tonight with a co-worker who may buy it. How funny. Thanks for the inputs though, guys!

I have that '05 MIK Casino coming... hopefully won't need to change out those pickups. My '96 stock Casino pickups still sound great today!
