New guy

Post by Rickissippi »

Longtime lurker, newly registered member here. Was a Rick fan for about twenty years before I became a Rick owner, which I finally did about a year ago. For some reason, I never would pull the trigger on one, even while buying several other guitars over the last several years -- I was afraid a Rick would be kind of a one-dimensional jangle machine. Was I ever wrong. My 2009 jetglo 360-6 surpassed my wildest expectations and certainly exceeds any guitar I've ever owned in performance and versatility. It is certainly not a one-trick pony; we just completed an album and I got more sounds out of it than I ever dreamed were possible. The bassist in my band (and longtime friend of mine with whom I've been in several bands over those twenty years) will be receiving his 4003 on Tuesday. I'm almost as excited for him as he is for himself.

I'm in the same position John, a 330/6 for me, and my bassist has just got a 4003FG, now to convince our lead guitarist to get one!

Welcome home!

I read Your lines and it seems to be alway the same: Every non-Rickenbacker owner (very often never tried one) says a Rickenbacker is a one-trick-pony. And as You mentioned correctly it is the opposite of!

Rickenbackers just sound warm(er) and bright(er) but simultaneusly they offer a lot of different sounds. All of them in a certain range, o.k., but all Teles, Paulas, Strats etc. have their special range, too.
I can not understand why we have to explain our guitars to ourselfs and others. Maybe sometimes this is caused by the Beatles' history and nobody can imagine another sound from Rickenbackers.

No Ibanez player would explain or excuse why he prefers an hand breaking flat neck combined with thin and cold sounds.
BTW I like the Ibanez acoustics and own and play a 12 stringer that is already 32 years old, e really great guitar!

Enjoy the community here!

I'm always surprised, that I'm not surprised, at the tones I'm able to get out of my Ricks, whether clean, overdriven, or heavily distorted. :D

Welcome to the forum! :)
There is no reason to ever be bored.

...why yes, I suppose I do have a double bound guitar fetish...

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. Would love to share my band's music with y'all, without trying to push my wares on anyone.

I do need to add pics of just the guitar to my registry. You can see some shots of it in my hands at my bands website here: http://www.thechurchkeys.com. We also have a music video on there with me playing it; however, the audio to the vid was recorded before I owned it, so I did that with my LP. (That's one way to make a Rick sound like an LP.)

I don't know how to load images yet (my Rick pics aren't online anywhere), but here's the vid, separately:

We just finished recording an album and I was just amazed at how versatile the guitar was throughout the process. The engineer loved it. I used it for almost all of my solos. I did one solo on the neck p'up only, recorded through an old Valco Supro, and recorded with a ribbon mic, and - as my drummer put it - I got a Grant Green type of tone out of it. If you heard it - well maybe not y'all, but other non-Rickheads - you'd never believe it was a Rick.

Finally, a Ric player who's (slightly) closer to me. Nice. Welcome!

Yep, Rics are truly amazing instruments. Most players underrate them, and those who are open-minded and willing to try something new usually reach for them. Back in May, a friend of mine, former guitar teacher, Chris came over to jam, and he was commenting about how much I used my Ric 1997. I told him because it was so versatile, and he should give it a whirl. So, he starts to play Beatles riffs, and liked it, but I told him to try various styles, such as rockabilly, blues and jazz, all of which he found the Ric a very nice match for. I told him that it gives me the vibe of an Epiphone Casino, a hollowbody with single-coil pickups that can do an incredible range of sounds. He agreed, thinking it was much better than a Casino!

Rics can be a great lead instrument, it's all about if one's willing to try!

Yeah, I know what you mean - Rick players are rare here because Ricks are rare here; I don't even think Mississippi has a Rick dealer, although there may be one in Hattiesburg. I've been getting many comments on it since using it as my main guitar live.

I definitely didn't know if my Rick could handle leads before I bought it (I was drinking the kool-aid (TM)). Glad to know I was dead wrong in having that anxiety.
