checker binding years

Post by randym »

I have two 4001 bass, both with checker bindings. The first one I bought in 1978 from a friend and was told it was a 1968. I ran the serial the othe rday and found it that it is really a 1964! Yeah! The other I bouth at a music shop and it was in bad shape. I was told it was a 1969, but I refinished it years ago and replaced the jackplate and thus, the serial. Any other ways to tell the year? I can post pics tonight.

Well, that depends. That was the last year it was standard on the 4001, but the 660 is still made with CB. Also, CB was an option for a while that could be ordered on a 4001 even after '73...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I played a gig when I was 18 that was a outdoor show. Mother Nature decided to make it rain and when I opened the case the next day the neck had warped. :(

I had someone that I was told did excellent work and found out that it was not totally true. He did fix the neck, but left a lot of evidence behind as you can see from the pics.

one more of the front. The back pickup is removed, but I'm 99% sure that I have it. We're in the process of moving and I know it's in a box somewhere. Not sure where the finger rest is, but it may be in a box as well.

Here is the one I'm not sure about. I bought it at a music store in 1982-83 for $125 if I remember right. It was a fireglo, but was in really rough shape. If I remember right, the guy at the store said it had a Bigsby trem tailpiece on it at one time. Had to fill in a big hole to mount the tailpiece that's on it now.
