Just pulled the trigger on a new 4003

Post by HydrasBreath »

Just ordered a JG 4003 from MF. This will be my second ric. The other being a believed to be 78 4001 (no serial number due to a replaced jackplate) painted white and union jack that I got off a forum member here quite a few years ago. That bass has a few issues so I figured I'd get a new 4003 for my main player and then just do some work/upgrading as funds allow on the 4001.

Rics are pretty much not available in my neck of the woods so actually getting my hands on one to try out was out of the question unfortunately. I've heard great things about the newer 4003's so hopefully buying one sight unseen will work out in my favor. Rics are just about the only basses that feel good in my hands to play and given their quality I'm sure I won't be disappointed. Can't wait till she gets here :D

now to play the waiting game...

That sounds killer! I've never owned a new Rickenbacker, but I was thinking of adding one to the lineup. But, I recently bought 2 vintage ones so funds will be tied up for a while!

And I bet my new SVT-VR will love it too

yeah I'm really looking forward to a nice clean and issue free ric (fingers crossed). Not that my 4001 is terrible or anything but the bridge pup doesn't adjust low enough to get out of the way of the strings hitting the poles when playing with any kind of force. My action isn't even that low at all really...could definitely go lower. The pickup isn't stock (it's a sergio) so I don't know I'm guessing that's the culprit somehow. I'm probably gonna replace the electronics with a pull/push circuit and stick a different pickup in the bridge...maybe try a toaster since I already have one in the neck.

hopefully it won't take too long for it to find it's way to me. MF had a 15% off thing going on but rics were in the exceptions so I didn't get it...I was kinda bummed about that but I did get free shipping surprisingly. Shipping to Canada for free must be something new they started recently.

+1!! Having a mix of years across a pretty wide spectrum, I feel comfortable saying that my 2011 4003 has one of the slimmer necks of all my basses. Fit and finish was great with no issues whatsoever. I'm ecstatic with mine!!

yeah gotta love that RAS

I still want to add a FG 4003 to my stable...and now they just came out with rubies. Those are tempting me too haha.

yeah part of me wanting to go with a new one was the usefulness of the push/pull circuit and the new slim neck profile. I don't like the necks on many basses besides rics. Pbass necks are way too chunky for me and jazz necks are too tapered. The geddy lee jazz is ok (I was trying a bunch of fenders since I was in the market for a new bass) but I don't really like the wider string spacing that other basses have.

I think I was made to play rics

I don't think I've opened up my P bass case in 6 months. I wonder if it is still in there!!  I should seriously think about selling it.

If it was made before mid 1965 I'll give you a couple hundred bucks to take it off your hands. 8) Finish color doesn't matter. CAR would be better, however.

here's hoping! It kinda sucks that the only way to get a new Ric in our neck of the woods is through MF or something similar. How long did the shipping process take for you? It would be cool if I could get an idea of when I can expect to have her in my hands. I'm already restless  it's gonna be a long few weeks.

Ha ha I know the feeling. My first Ric came from American Musical Supply by Fed Ex. It was here in less than a week if I remember correctly. My next was the ill-fated MID (see other threads on this board). For some strange reason MF wouldn't ship it directly to Canada, so I sent it via my father-in-law in the USA. Now THAT was torturous! Fortunately MF sent me my replacement JG (did I mention how much I like the JG? :D) directly via UPS and it was here in less than a week. Of course it felt longer because I was checking the tracking every five minutes.
