noise

Post by davidj4 »

Can anyone help me? I have a mint 2006 620-6FG. The pickups make an awful lot of noise. When I move around the noise ebbs and flows leading me to believe there is an RF factor. I've tried a noise canceller to no avail. The noise can be so awful I thought there might be a loose/broken ground but I opened her up only to be amazed at how beautiful, neat and tight the circuitry is. I've heard single coils can be noisy but I can't believe it's this noisy. Thank you in advance for any input.

Do you have fluorescent lights or a dimmer in the vicinity? These can cause a lot of noise in single coil pickups...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Try different a instrument cable and see if it helps. Take it to a store like Guitar Center and ask if you can try out some different cables. Unless of course you already using a new and high-end cable.

You may also have some bad insulation on a wire that you can't "see."

Single coils are noisy, and the noise is increased exponentially in relation to the amount of gain. It's hard to judge when people say that their pickups are "noisy" between the amount expected, and wether or not there is actaully a problem.

One other thing I'd also check (if you bought the guitar used) is whether the pick-ups are original - there are fakers out there and its possible a prior owner could have swapped out (eg with fake toasters)

Thanks everyone but I'm sure the pickups are original and I've tried more than one high-quality cable and I've determined it's not the amp.
