6/12 Converter comb assembly

Hi all,
I am just thinking about modifying my 2001 360/12 with the converter comb assembly sold by winfield vintage. But before spending 300 Bucks on this i want to ask if anybody tried any convertible guitar. Especially playability in "6 string mode". Every experience could help !

I have an original one. They work well from the point of view of muting the octave strings, but you have to remember that you're still playing a 12 string, so it feels exactly the same from the point of view of strumming and fingering chords, it just sounds different. If you're doing lead work, it's a little harder to bend the strings as the octave strings are clamped down and even harder to bend than normal.

Oh........The originals also have an extra block of wood in the body. I'm not sure how Chip's combs fit and it the extra internal block is necessary?

Peter, your guitar isn't set up to accept the comb. There are internal reinforcements and mounting blocks on the convertible models that you guitar isn't equipped with. So, it's not a bolt-on accessory.

JDog can chime in though. He converted a 360/12v64 with mixed results, but he's the resident converter comb expert.

Yep I done did it. It works, but reinforcement is needed. I installed Chip's parts on a '98 360/12v64. When I pull down the octave strings (all or some) the guitar goes slightly out of tune. Just enough to be a problem. I plan to open the patient back up and do a second surgery to remedy this. At that time (probably not anytime soon) I will be making some other equally shocking modifications.

Wow, that sounds like devotion to modding above and beyond the COD....was the V64 a healthy donor??

I suppose that could work too. I went for the v64 because 1) I needed a 21-fretter and 2) I knew the guard pieces would line up.

The v64 was a near mint piece. And I drilled holes in it. Kind of like people who jump out of a perfectly good airplane.

Yikes, timing was horrible. I now have a nearly complete FG 360/12v64 with the neck clean broken off and no plans for it yet! Would have made a great basis for that project...

I'm lovin' your style Jason. These are the types of ideas I usually get after 10 pints of Guinness. Luckily, by the time the next morning comes round I usually can't remember my own name let alone the modding plans so my guitars survive to live another day in peace...

Your airplane quote brought back good memories of my college days. My best friend there was a serving RAF officer who couldn't comprehend the craze amongst seemingly all the students to try out parachute jumping....."there's no way anyone in the RAF ever jumps out of a serviceable aircraft..."

But I wanted one with the neck ON. They're easier to play that way!

Sure does look like an anger management parts bin....and I'm not the only one around with one either.
