'guitarguitar' of the UK and duty question

Post by melvinsrule »

Is there duty I have to pay on a Walnutburst 330 shipped from the UK to the US ?
Has anyone had experience dealing in the US with "The UK's Largest Guitar Store."

There's no duty to be paid but there's still customs brokerage just as if it were an imported product, so that has to be paid either way. If shipped by UPS or FedEx, that fee is included in the shipping, as I recall, as they operate their own brokerages.

Here in the UK, I've had a few occasions to curse the (accepted) need to pay duty and UK VAT on imported instruments from the States. This recently cost me a much sought-after 4002 purchase - although I could afford the instrument (just about!), I couldn't afford to pay the duty on top of that, so had to decline what was a good deal from the seller. :(

1978 4002 Walnut
1986 4008 Silver
1999 4001 V63 White
2012 4004 Jetglo

If you come over here in person, then you get to purchase "vat free", which reduces the point of sale price by 20%. All advertised consumer retail prices in the UK have, by law, to include the VAT.
To be honest though, why would you want to? The prices over here are not exactly bargain basement, the choice is limited, pre-owned ones cost as much as new ones and the freight is unlikely to be low cost.

There's a good reason why my last one came from Kentucky! :D

I think he specifically wants the 'Walnutburst' as they are exclusive to this store and only 25 have been manufactured worldwide. I've seen one on display at the Birmingham store and it is stunning. If only there was a lefty version made I would've snapped it up straight away.

Here's the link in case anyone wants to see,
