Replacement case for 4001/3

Post by jayfbv »

My case is falling apart on me. Where should I go for a new one? I imagine this may be difficult and/or pricey. Any third party cases that trully fit a 4001?

What type case4 are you looking for? All plastic SKB type or tolex, all black or vintage style?

Used cases pop up quite often on eBay. I do like the tolex cases, personally but I think the SKB type protect better. If you want new then the price is pretty much set. Contact RIC and or PotR. For the ultimate in protection I recently purchased an Anvil/Calzone case. Talk about heavy duty!!

Perhaps my favorite RIV cases are the form fitted tolex covered cases. These you don't see everyday but I did manage to snag one off of ebay a year or so ago that needed a little work.

I prefer the older Rick tolex cases. I hate the SKB cases with their collapsing feet, and the fact that you can't leave them in your bass case leaning up against the wall without being latched shut because the bass will slide out and potentially get scratched on the aluminum trim. I've picked up a couple of the older 70's 4001 cases on Ebay on average for about $125.00 shipped. Avoid cases made for Fenders as they don't have the storage compartment in the right place to keep the bass from moving.

I want a tolex covered rectangle that has the correct internal padding. Mine's return springs are broken and the handle leather is threatening to disintegrate at any moment. It's my understanding that the originals were made by the same people who made them for Fender...which is why I have the same orange interior as an early 70's Fender.

I have a couple Roto type Strat cases and I don't like them.

$250 to $300...wow! (I forgot about Pick 'o the Ricks)

Musician's friend carries the silver vintage style cases, and often have 15% off coupons you can use with them.

I got two fitted G&G silver cases on ebay a few months back...I think they were about $150/each. The guy said he had just bought 10 and was selling them off. I needed a replacement for my '68 4001 and my '81 4000 didn't have a case at all. The cases are really nice and they were new. I don't remember the guy's user id though and it's been too long to find it on my history...I had never seen a G&G for a Ric before.

I had a Gator case for a 4001 - it fitted, but you'd want to put a sheet or something in there for it to be really snug.

Not a bad case though - and it will fit a Ric. I had to look for ages, as many of the off-the-peg cases are more Fender shaped.

...the 4001/4003 also moves a lot in the silver vintage style case, as it is a bit longer than the bass.

Ya, as much as I like the look of the vintage case, I got rid of the one I had cuz the bass moved around too much. If these had form fit padding in them, they'd be perfect.
