Hear the Ox playing his Ric

Post by ilan »

I didn't know this video existed. The Who (then still called The High Numbers) live in 1964 at the Railway Hotel. Nice footage of the Ric(s).

My favorite clip of the band, by far!

Cool story too - this clip was filmed by Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp who would later become their managers. They found this local R&B band and began filming them with the intention of creating a longer film piece/documentary on the mod/R&B scene. They dumped the film idea, got into management and the rest is history.

It was thought that these films were lost or destroyed until a few years ago (2006, maybe) when these original film reels were found in an attic in Sweden. Incredible!

Well...well...Pete was already swinging his arm around even back then. Often wondered when he started that!

He started doing this after watching Keith Richards warm up before a gig by swinging his arm in a circle stretch... about two months before this clip was filmed!

I never tire of watching this clip.

Collin: I remember you telling me they found the reel. Would be nice if it was shared and a DVD/Blu Ray was made of all the footage. Would've been better as the bonus disc on Maximum R&B Live DVD than the Kenney Jones concert from 1981. Schecters, trebly Leslied bass and Jones' mellowness didn't make a good Who.

Jake, sadly I don't think they filmed the whole show.

About three years ago I remember randomly seeing a pair of reel-to-reel 35mm films on eBay that were being sold with "High Numbers - 1964" written on the side, and there were tons of bids. I am still kicking myself for not bidding as they sold for around $1500, and were likely other reels from Lambert/Stamp's project (if they were legit). Oh well, hopefully they'll surface some day.
