Rick James 4001 in WSJ
I was going through the Wall Street Journal recently, and I an image of a guy holding a jetglo (not white) 4001 grabbed my attention. It was a big 7.5 x 5 inch image. The fellow holding the 4001 is Jeff Jampol, and he apparently manages the estates of many dead rock & roll performers, including Rick James. I am sure that this field didn't exist 20 years ago, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, here is the link:

Obviously Rick James had more than one Ric (like many of us).

...looks like a more recent (pre 2009) 4003
!?
Re: Rick James 4001 in WSJ
To my eyes, the headsight is a smaller one like my early 80's 4001S models.

That 4003 has the larger modern/vintage headstock and other key features that identify it as a '00s model.

Yeah, on second glance that headstock is larger than I thought. James died in 2004, so it is plausible.

Yeah...Not so easy to tell from the angle of the camera, but I'd say its a (bulbous headstock) 1997-2006 4003.

...and the smaller inlays places it pre 2008, for sure.
