Hi,
I know there's a lot of info on this on the forum but i can't seem to find what im looking for.
I was wondering. I've got a Ric330 stringed with Ric strings 0-10. What would flatwound do for my sound? I play in a 60's coverband btw. Here is where i order my strings. Www.gitaarsnaren.com. Any help would be great.
Flatwounds??

Re: Flatwounds??
I really like Pyrimid Flats on my 12 string.

I'll give you my two cents worth. I'm sure some will disagree with me.
You don't give a lot of info, other than the 330 part. If I'm to assume it has high gain pickups and is a 6-string, I wouldn't be too keen on jumping to flats.
I have a '99 330 which I bought in 2001. About a year ago, I bought a 2007 340, somewhat overcoming the need to keep the 330 around. Not being one to readily give up guitars (some call me a hoarder
), I usually spend a bit of time trying to come up with a discriminator make the 'obsolete' guitar 'necessary' again. I had just bought my first set of TI flats for my 360/12v64 after reading all sorts of good things about them here, and I really liked them on that guitar.
I ordered 10s for one of my Teles and two sets of 11s. One went on my 330 and one went on my '78 Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman. Like them on the Gretsch (vintage rockabilly vibe), somewhat undecided on the Tele (but I've got a couple other Teles, so I've left them for the time being), and really didn't like them at all on the 330. Since I paid around $25 per set, I didn't want to be too rash about pulling them off the 330, so left them on for a while thinking I might come around. Just never really liked it.
The wound strings in the flatwound set are pretty 'dead' sounding. That makes the plain strings on a 12-string stand out more and gives a nice sound on a 12-string. The Gretch and Tele are both pretty bright guitars to begin with, so the flats kinda throttle that back a little. IMO, the 330 with high gains and flats just wasn't cutting it. Just sounded dead to me.
I recently swapped a couple of other 6-string Ricks over to 12k 'hot toasters', so I had a few stagger-wound toasters sitting around. I ended up putting two of those in the 330 with the flats the other day and it's certainly improved the situation. The toasters are enough brighter that they compensate a little better. Still not sold on keeping flats on there, though.
All that being said, I'm sure there are several people on here who love the sound of flats with high gains. There are certainly a lot of people who love flats with toasters. It's really a matter of preference and what sounds good for what you're playing. They will definitely sound 'deader'. If you think that might be a good thing (it can be), I'd say try a set. Worst case you're out $25 and have the answer for yourself....

Life is suffering; the cause of suffering is desire. Envy is a deadly sin. Save your soul, go ahead and buy another one....
