GC Used modified 4004: Interesting idea, meh result

Someone put a homemade 4003-style guard on a Mapleglo 4004. I don't particularly care for the result, but an interesting idea, I suppose (not sure what's under the guard). Whaddaya guys think?

I did find a picture of a better done version of this idea. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the 4004 altogether, but it gets it a little closer to a 4003S

Looks like a cadidate for a custom color refin once the guard is removed considering the price you could negotiate.

Dane did a really nice "conversion" of a 4004L to something resembling a 4003, very cool in my opinion. It is pictured somewhere in Paul's Rick Bass book, not sure which page but it is a beauty in red, IIRC....
Re: GC Used modified 4004: Interesting idea, meh result
I used to own that 4004Cii. When I got it, the treble side truss rod was unajustable due to the fact that the nuts had come off at the body end. Since I was going to have to route out some wood to get to it, I decided on a 4001S conversion with a guard to cover up the work. I also routed the body for standard mounting of a 4001 bridge pickup, and replaced the lame Schaller M4's with 4003 tuners. This bass actually sounded very much like a 4001 with the guitar high gains I used with Toaster covers on them. I've since sold the bass, and it's somewhere in Illinois. This is the bass in Paul's book, but I don't think it's credited to me.brianeharmonjr wrote:I did find a picture of a better done version of this idea. Yes it is. Page 137. There are eight photos of Dane's masterworks, and they are all credited except for the Midnight Blue 4004L with the pickguard on page 107.aceonbass wrote: This is the bass in Paul's book, but I don't think it's credited to me.

Thanks Paul! I stand corrected, although I don't think I was credited with John Luke's former 4004FG with the gold '57 4001 style guard on it and the HB1's in the 4002 position. "Masterworks"...I like that

Right. I don't think I had enough correct info on that one at the time of publishing, so just credited it to JL. Sorry. My main concerns on credits in the book was for the photographers.
