Early 80's Hardcase?

Post by spongebob »

I've got the chance to snare a NOS Ric hardcase - I've been advised that it's from the early 80's - can anyone confirm this?

It's essentially as new and unused.

I'm looking to pick this up - but TBH, as my bass is a 70's model, I'd be looking to sell rather than keep. I have another potential 4001 project incoming, and the sale of the case would go towards funding that.

Is there a market for these - what kind of ballpark would I be looking at? I'd be happy to ship anywhere in the world! :D

I've no idea what the timeline for various types of Rick cases might be,but that looks very similar to the cases i got with my early 70's Ricks. I sold one of them recently for $250,as it was too big inside (no body-conforming panels) and had only one tiny 4 inch cross brace under the nut area to support the neck. The other case i have has a 2nd mid-neck brace, and a snug body shaped interior panels.

Great stuff guys.

There are supporting panels for the neck, not for the body contours, though. Interior is blue.

Only have it on word of mouth that it's early 80s. Guy used to run a music shop, and it's just old stock he forgot about as the shop is long gone.

Will try to get a shot up on the inside tomorrow. So far, this does sound workable....

Do you think that's it a genuine case? I've only got verbal confirmation that it is....from what I've Google'd, it looks real 70s - early 80s...can't see any issue.

It looks right to me. The blue plush was typically a Rick thing. It looks like period Cheney hardware and the handle appears correct for that time period.

Thanks Jim.

Do you know if we can pinpoint more of an exact era?

It's not seventies, or eighties (leather handle not plastic 'til late '70s, cross braces instead of neck pad (filled or unfilled with pads) throughout the '80s...so going by the register images, it's 1990 to 1994 I would say.

Thanks Mark.

Guessing that would lower the value somewhat?

Maybe, certainly the desirability. The rich blue velvet, fully form-fitted ones from the early-mid seventies are the ones which float my boat. :D

I believe I have one of those floating around here, somewhere.
