Serial number question

When I type this serial number, XX 2000, into the RIC decoder from a guitar I am considering it come back with: "your amplifier was made in 1984".

Any ideas?

IIRC XX signifies a replacement jack plate, so it makes sense that they do not decode properly. I would think they wouldn't decode at all, actually, that there would a message saying it is a replacement so the date could not be verified.

As Jeff has noted the XX in the SN XX 2000 (or sometimes YY) means it was a guitar that was issued a replacement jackplate by Rickenbacker.

Sometime this was done when the guitar went back to them for refinishing, as in this bass. XX2313

About the only way to date the instrument will be the CTS pots in the wiring harness.

I take it that the 2000 number on the jack plate then doesn't necessarily mean that the guitar was built in 2000 but that for whatever reason Rickenbacker replaced the jack in 2000?

The 2000 number means that it was the one after 1999, but the one before 2001, It has nothing to do with the year. They seem to have started this XX plate practice in the early 1980s. Presumably with XX 001 and then sequentially after that. The first V64 is late 1984. And they stopped making them around 2001 or so for the more accurate c63 series. They still make the c63 today.

Not sure why RIC doesn't recreate the jackplate if the SN is known.
