73 4001

Post by vox007 »

I removed the pick guard on my 73 4001 and inside the neck pickup route, 2-27-65 was penciled in...Could this be a body or neck build date? I'm trying to post a pic,but it's not letting me..I'll try later after I reduce the size...

Anything's possible.
If it was made in '65, it would not have a skunk stripe and would have walnut peg-head wings, among other things.
Need pix! :)

This sounds like a great idea to totally screw up the collector market.

then again, maybe the person who put the date in there was still stuck in the '60's.

It's only a guess mind you, but perhaps some previous owner put their date of birth in the cavity as a means of identification.

I have seen people's social insurance numbers in the cavities of a few used guitars.

I once saw someone's initials and driver's license number written in the sound hole of a Sept. '68 MG 360.

here you go OP!

Looks like a former owner wrote that in, being it's on top of the paint. By contrast, see the "4001" that the factory penciled in and blocked off before painting.

Definitely not a '65, but looks like a great bass!

I think it's funny how slapdash the neck pickup routing is!
