MONA visits the Majestic Ballromm Birkenhead

Post by 13_temple_street »

An early appearance by the Beatles on Thursday 28th June 1962 at the Majestic Ballroom, Conway Street Birkenhead. (When the Majestic Ballroom opened in 1962 it was a luxury venue compared to some of the cellar clubs. It was owned and run by the ‘Top Rank ‘organization ) It offers a rare glimpse of some of the Beatle's performances organized by their new manager Brian Epstein, Noticeably the new stylish Mohair shiny black suits with Satin stripes are incorporated into the neatly cut trousers. Little wonder that the management decided to offer the group further bookings, previous to Epstein’s managerial appointment the Beatles performed at the Iron Door (aka Liverpool Jazz Society ) Seven Pounds Ten Shillings, the last appearance of the group ‘Beatles Farewell Party at then aka Storyville Jazz club under Epstein’s management the fee was Forty-Four Pounds. He accompanied the Beatles to the venues in his early management period to collect the money. Visitors to the Iron Door were not familiar with Mrs. Mona Best she owned the thriving out-of-town venue ‘The Casbah ’ After her son joined the Beatles in August 1960 Mrs. Best (Mo’) started to take on an active role, she purchased a van, she arranged for the Casaba’s doorman to drive the group to the venues and act as the road manager, she alone was responsible for bookings for the band when Brian Epstein became the Beatles manager ‘Mo Best was none too pleased, friction developed and Mona’ was cast out of the group's management roll ‘. Ray Mcfall the owner of the Cavern Club was experiencing a hard time with attendance at his venue in Mathew Street, due in the main to the Iron Doors' new policy of promoting the famous All-Night sessions. Mona Best made the effort to attend the Beatle's milestone performance this was the first opportunity for the Beatles to try out the brand new suits. She was observed leaning against a wall wearing an expensive-looking black fur coat.
