That Old Searchers Magic
That Old Searchers Magic
Today I picked up a British Searchers compilation on vinyl. It's a double set from 1977 (new old stock) on Pye Records (FILD 002).
It includes thirty tracks, namely:
Sweets for my sweet / Sugar 'n' spice / Ain't gonna kiss ya / Farmer John / Love potion #9 / Alright / Needles and pins / Saturday night out / Don't throw you love away / Some other guy / Saints and searchers / Ain't that just like me / Someday we're gonna love again / No one else could love me / It's in her kiss / When you walk in the room / Sea of heartbreak / What have they done to the rain? / This feeling inside / Goodbye my love / Till I met you / Each time / He's got no love / When I get home / Take me for what I'm worth / Take it or leave it / Have you ever loved somebody / Popcorn, double feature / Western Union / Second hand dealer.
I'm just curious: is every one of the above tracks available on any current Searchers compilation (on CD, of course), or do you spot any rare tracks? Thanks for reading.

A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Sergio,
While none of these tracks is rare per se (Pye repackaged the Searchers material many times over), it sounds like a very nice compilation of the group's 1963-7 period. From the track listing it appears you have all the A sides released on Pye and many of the B's as well.
"Saturday Night Out" is the flip of "Needles and Pins" and is a great showcase for Tony Jackson, as is "Saints and Searchers". "Each Time" is a track that should have been a single and wasn't, "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" was written by the Hollies and features fine drumming by John Blunt, and "Popcorn, Double Feature" is a personal fave of mine though it didn't do much on the charts (why?).
I have all the above tracks on "The Searchers 30th Anniversary Collection" on the Collectables label, a triple CD set. The more recent "40th Anniversary" compilation would have all the above and more, so you may want to try looking for that one.

You have a collectors item then in 30th anniversary because Saints ans Searchers is not on it officially. The Saerchers Anthology has all but Some Other Guy and Sea Of Heartbreak nad will be cheaper. There is a new release again of the pye stuff scheduled for 23/2 release a 3 disc set but again the odd track missing from Jeff's list. The album you have Jeff was called The File Series.

TODAY'S THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
Mercury put out two (one and one half, actually) "Star Club" LPs. The second one was "The Searchers Meet the Rattles (a German rock band)", with one side to each.Searchers tracks included: "Sweet Nothin's", "Shaking All Over", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Don't You Know", "Maybelline", and "It's All Been A Dream"

Appearently there weren't too many copies of the Ifield/Beatles album ("Jolly What!) pressed at the time so it was hard to find even in '64. Vee Jay released the first Beatles LP in a variety of different formats which we can talk about over on the Beatles fourm.
I have the Mercury Searchers "England's Newest Singing Discovery-Recorded at the Star Club" LP. Again there are not too many copies floating around these days, though I belive Line Records in Germany re-relased this with a different picture on the cover sometime back in the '80's. When I saw the Searchers in 1984 John was nice enough to sign it for me. He said the group had no idea this was going to be released at the time.
