'78 4001 on ebay UK

Post by marty »

What do you make of this '78 4001 on ebay UK?
The pickguard at the neck pickup looks too square and too big for the pickup.

Maybe a different pickup was put in at some stage and the original later put back or maybe something dodgy going on here?

I've seen that before, maybe not quite that big but I've seen it before on Ric's and actually you can move the pickup a little bit with it like that if you have a soft string, I've seen them very tight before also. Looks like a nice bass to me. Even if it's been reemed out a little for another pickup I wouldn't let something minor like that stop me from buying that bass.

I'm sure that pickguard is not Rickenbacker-made.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

The hole on my new 81 is a little big and the Seymore Duncan that came out of it is a lot smaller than the hole so it wasn't widened for that. I think these were cut by hand. The holes are always a little rough on the old ones.
