Sitting 'round the house this weekend with a bad case of swollen knees, I spent some time to watch "Across the Night: The Creation of Diorama" a Silverchair DVD about their latest album. (A must have even if you're not a fan) I noticed that Daniel Johns, the band's front man plays a 330/12FG. I wouldn't normally have posted this as I'm sure you all care, but I had remembered on that "other Rickenbacker forum" about groups these days and the lack of RICs in modern music.

Whereas I, for example, would argue that there are quite a few Rics in modern music! It's a funny old world, eh?
I look at all the bands I listen to... say from the past decade... and there are definitely Rics around: U2, REM, Lush, etc. I have a feeling I've seen a Ric guitar and/or bass involved with Garbage before, too... but that's a hazy thought.

Seems like a lot of people you would not expect have a Rick that they occasionally use for whatever reason (Sound, cool factor, etc). People like the guys in Motley Crue even. But the number of top artists that use Ricks as their "Main Axe" is obviously lower. How "main usage" stacks up with other manufacturers as a proportion of guitars in existence is an interesting question, but probably pretty hard to answer definitively. But it seems like there is a thread of hardcore rick tradition even in currently popular bands - Radiohead, The Strokes, Coldplay just to name a few.
I cried when I heard that Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney had switched from a 330JG to an SG.
As a complete aside, anybody who likes Beatlesque or XTC-ish power-pop should check out a group called The Shins - I don;t think they use ricks but they are great. Little pop gems, good witty lyrics.
