I think the top of the headstock has simply been burnt to a nice crisp...

Well my drill's broke, so I'll just use this screwdriver to make a hole for that 5th string. This oughta be a good place for it.

Guys, I looked at it very carefully in super size mode using a 21" monitor and I believe that the bass isn't burnt, that's electrical tape. It's not on the back of the head stock at all, if you look close enough you can see that it's at least two strips of black electrical tape, you can see the seam between the two running diagonal to the wave.
I think the headstock took a hard hit on the end and the paint and possibly some of the wood started coming up in chunks. Just one other thing, did anyone see how high the strings are off the neck, you can see it from several angles. I could launch arrows with that; I'd say the truss rods ends haven't seen the light of day since it was built.

Hmmm. This guitar was originally registered by someone in the military, age 22, from Guitar Center, San Diego. Perhaps Dedgoat can untangle the acronyms "FROOANFRALISC" as used in the address? Also, it says "SSN-79" which sounds like he was a submariner.

Maybe this bass was used to shore up a quick leak patch or saw action in a waterfront bar.

It is kinda funny- every guitar has a story, doesn't it?

I don't know about the address listed, the Navy uses different acronyms than we do, however the USS Jefferson City (SSN 759),is docked there, I couldn't find a reference to a SSN 79. It might be an older Permit class boat, ask me about Special Forces, then I can be of some knowledge!

Once again I see a parallel between RIC and Ferrari! I have been a long time subscriber to Cavallino magazine (The Journal of Ferrari History) and there too the feeling is that each Ferrari has a story to be told!

Does JH have or ever had a Ferrari?

I've raced them before but wouldn't care to have the trouble of owning one. I'll stick with German cars, thank you, as I'd rather NOT have a car with a story.

Most of my cars have stories, like them throwing a piston thru the hood on the way to a Red Wings game, or having the oil pump blow out on the Lodge freeway in the middle of the night...Unfortunately, they also got "names" that I cannot reprint here.
