Out of Phase Sound - 360/330

I've been asking around about how Peter Buck and Mitch Easter achieved a sort of "out of phase" sound in the early 80's that is associated with their sound and their Rick's.

It seems that they may have favored a phaser of some sort to achieve this. Any thoughts here? What settings/or what phaser could achieve this? Thanks. -- Jeff
