A brief question: I have a (bass) fireglo 4001 (?) NO binding (makes for a better weighted/ playing bass in my opinion), dot fretboard; bought new in '90, you'd almost think it was a V63, but the pickups are the 'bumpy' kind. Also, the control knobs were not the vintage 'slash' knobs. Anybody know what this is?

Sounds like it's a 4003S. S = standard, no binding, dot neck position markers, etc. The 4003 is the deluxe model.

I'd go with the V63 idea. I have seen V63 basses
from around '90 that had a Hi Gain PU in the neck with the "button" polepieces. But otherwise, the basses I refer to Did have the rest of the "correct" Vintage details.

Does it have a horseshoe PU? If not, it's a 4003s. Also, the non-vintage control knobs give it away.

By now I have established it IS a 4003S. I've since put vintage knobs on. I don't see many of them listed for sale, and I certainly prefer it to my older 4001's (long since gone). It has only recently been supplanted by my CS4001.
